The genre of this magazine is obviously a film magazine, which is clearly shown through the masthead, which reads "Total Film" and is a well known film magazine. The genre of the film being promoted and advertised on the cover of this magazine is a comic book film, but it clearly has aspects of horror which are shown throughout the graffiti on all over it. The fact that the graffiti is red stands out a lot on the black and white black ground, making it more striking, and the colour red indicates danger and horror. The three colour rule is used well, as the whole cover is in red, black and white which are associated with horror. The graffiti shows that the character 'The Joker' has sabotaged the magazine, and put quite violent things, by calling 'Batman' a 'freak', and calling other people that are featured 'clowns'.
Also he has indicated that he will cause 'complete chaos' and that he 'wages war of terror' indicate that the narrative within the film could be something to with the Joker sabotaging Batman and the plot of the film. Although you can tell that Batman is the main character and the hero of the film, as without the graffiti, he is shown as powerful in the medium long shot on the front of the magazine. The Joker is shown as the villain, which is his character, as he is causing trouble for the superhero.
Batman is represented as the hero, as he is shown as strong and powerful, but then The Joker is represented as strong and powerful and he has managed to sabotage the hero.
The target audience for this magazine would be people in their 20's and over who are interested in film and are of lower/middle class, although there could be wide target audience on students aged 16-20 who are studying media or film at college or university.
The low key lighting of the photo shows that the film has a dark and sinister side to it, also his costume makes him look like he is expecting conflict. The pose again makes him look powerful as he he looking slightly down on the audience and his stance is strong looking.
The main cover line across the front of the magazine shows the film that the magazine is promoting, and the the smaller cover lines show other people, events and things they are promoting.
The magazine has an, issue number, date and price which is placed above the 'M' and the barcode is placed at the bottom left of the cover, therefore these don't take up a lot of space.
The magazine doesn't have a positioning statement, or a banner across the top of the cover, although the magazine usually does, which shows that this is a special issue/edition of this magazine.
The masthead takes up quite a lot of room, to show which magazine it is, and is typical of this magazine, as the masthead is the same on each one. The same font is also used on every edition of the magazine to keep the house style the same, it stands out and is dramatic.
