Research and Planning: 2nd Film Magazine Analysis

The genre of this magazine which is shown through the the masthead which reads 'Entertainment Weekly' as it is a film magazine. The genre of this film is horror which can be seen by the facial expression of the subject on the magazine. It is also a musical which are stereotypically upbeat which is why it doesn't look too sinister, although it does achieve the creepy effect.
The three colour rule is used well as it uses only blue white and red for the text. The picture is in black and white so doesn't ruin the other colours, and also goes along with the horror theme of the film.
You can tell that Johnny Depp plays the main character in this film as the medium close up of him takes up the whole page. The expression on the main characters face represents him as strong and powerful, and he also sees to be looking down at the reader, which again shows him as powerful.
The target audience for this magazine would be people in the 20 and above, and watch films as a hobby and interest, but the other area of target audience would probably be students aged 16 and above who are studying Media of Film related subjects.
The large cover line reading "Starring Johnny Depp" shows the film that the magazine is promoting to go with the photo gives extra information about the film, to make the reader more interested. There isn't many more cover lines on this magazine as it is quite simple and effective, and shows that the main story of this weeks edition is based around Johnny Depp and his film 'Sweeney Todd'. The only other cover lines that read "Holiday Movie Preview" and "The Inside Scoop On 39 New Films" shows the genre of the actual magazine makes is seem quite gossipy by using "the inside scoop", which makes it seem interesting and attractive.
This magazine doesn't have a positioning statement, which keeps the cover simple, and after looking at other editions of this magazine, you can tell it is to keep it simple ans focused on the main feature. It also doesn't have a bar code  which is probably placed on the back. The issue number and date is positioned above the text in the top right corner, which keeps it out of the way of the photo and makes more room for other stories.
The lighting of the photo is quite low key as it is black and white, which shows the genre of the film as the storyline is grim and gruesome. The costume makes him look more sinister and the chains around his neck make him look violent. The pose shows his serious tone, and the evil look suggests that he may do something evil within the story of the film.
The masthead is big and bold which is typical of the magazine, as the size and font is the same on every edition of the magazine and keeps it consistent. The colour of the masthead stands out, as the name of the magazine is obviously very important.
